WARM UP SLOWLY

No matter how fast you plan to run during your workout, begin with a brisk walking pace for three minutes to warm up your muscles.

USE CORRECT TECHNIQUE

To avoid overuse injuries as you develop fitness and go longer, you’ll need to establish solid running technique. Practice breathing smoothly, stand upright, relax your shoulders, and focus on keeping light on your feet rather than pounding the treadmill.

PUSH YOURSELF

Your speed and endurance will increase. As you master your runs, consider adding different programmed workouts to keep things fresh—cross-training on a rower or elliptical is a great way to vary your workouts while continuing to push yourself to new fitness highs.

KNOW WHEN TO BACK OFF

Listen to your body. Some days you may feel like pushing the pace, while other days you may not. When muscle soreness lingers or motivation lags, take an easy day or do an active recovery run. Your mind and body will come back stronger for it.

DON'T SKIP STRETCHING

Jumpstart your recovery by stretching after your workouts, while your muscles are warm and pliable. Just 10 minutes of stretching is enough to flush lactic acids from your muscles, which will also ease muscle soreness later.

SET GOALS

Any goal without a plan to achieve it is simply a wish. Whatever your goals—whether increased endurance or weight loss—write them down. With goals and a plan to reach them, you can do anything you set your mind to!
